Re: Rate "The Eaters of Light"

Thanks for the outline description, JMW. It still doesn't explain why the light eaters eat people, exactly, but I can live with that. As you have shown, the story itself is well constructed (on its own terms) and the main annoyances are peripheral things like the heavy handed (and apparently histor...

Re: Classic Who vs. NuWho

Surely the 45 minutes of sheer vapidity broadcast on Saturday isn't seriously being considered superior to a classic like Tomb?! No, but I'd advise a re-watch of Tomb. Reappraise it with the same scrutiny as often new Who receives and you may find it wanting in several of the areas where th...

Re: Rate "The Empress of Mars"

What was the point in changing the impact of the ice warrior guns. Crap effect. Pointless. Probably the same point as changing their voices. They can't help themselves, and think they know better than their classic series superiors. Well they changed the ice warrior weapons in the Peladon stories.

Re: Rate "The Lie of the Land"

And did everyone know Bill's gay? Just the one nod this week, just in case you'd forgotten!

Did everyone know that Ericthehalffbee is once again complaining about Bill being gay?

Re: Rate "Oxygen"

Worst episode of the current run for me. Ham fisted writing, story went nowhere. Performances were fine it was just a bit cack handed. How did not go anywhere? Everything made sense. Charging a fee for oxygen for workers who weren't needed anyway makes sense? It's explained in the episode, the suit...

Re: Rate "Oxygen"

"Great...we rescued a racist." What. The. Hell. Seriously...I mean, they just can't do it, can they? They cannot go an episode without having to mention something PC-related. Blue people have been in Doctor Who before...the only thing Rose said at the time was "He's blue"...we d...

Re: Rate "Knock Knock"

Being a huge problem win nuwho every since it came back with the constant deusexmachina endings where everybody comes back to life and all the events never happened.

Apart from all the times when that didn't happen.

Re: THE CELESTIAL TOYMAKER

Steve Roberts back on GB's Missing Episodes Megathread briefly touched on the N-word in CT, whilst nattering about altering or amending stuff in old programmes... Thanks, Steve. Do you think bloopers should be fixed in old programmes in general? For me it shows that these people weren't perfect. In...

Re: THE CELESTIAL TOYMAKER

On another forum I frequent someone made a good point about people who want to see the dog called n****r in the Dam Busters and object to any attempt to censor it. It is less about accuracy and more about people getting off on hearing the words heel n****r get down n****r. I'm one of those people -...

Re: THE CELESTIAL TOYMAKER

This argument is only relevant if Celestial Toymaker has been found. Would it be censored? Highly unlikely. Probably about as likely as some posters not mentioning the letters "PC" in their posts. So not going to happen then. Not necessarily. The BBC Audio version had the "N-word&quo...

Re: Rate "Knock Knock"

There’s no contradiction at all. A series arc does not automatically equal ‘gripping’ and it only keeps the audience coming back for more if it is. The arcs in Doctor Who aren’t gripping because they aren’t the focus; they’re usually tacked on to individual stories and merely exist to provide a set...

Re: Rate "Knock Knock"

You've also missed the point about Broadchurch, which was that it was gripping television with a story that ran over a number of episodes that kept people keen to watch the next one. Doctor Who's current obsession with single story episodes with a loose season long arc doesn't accomplish this becau...

Re: Rate "Knock Knock"

therefore isn’t the fresh blood the show is crying out for.

You aware that Mike Bartlett the writer of this episode is new to the series right? As for the rest of complaints it's the usual why can't the show be like it used to be when I first watched it? Also Broadchurch used a season long arc.

Re: Rate "Knock Knock"

Usual great set up and duff ending for me. Enjoyed it though so I guess that's a bonus. Too many plot holes to list and making Harry Sullivan gay was just dumb and unnecessary. Seems to be riffing on past stories again too, including Ghost Light, Midnight and Fires Of Pompeii. And that ending was i...
