Re: What Made You Fall in Love With Classic DOCTOR WHO?

The second episode of the omnibus edition of Earthshock . I hadn't much been into Tom Baker's Doctor Who, it was kind of just there when I was a kid, but Earthshock with its serious tone, action, and near-indestructible cybermen was a very welcome shock. I couldn't believe old Doctor Who could be so...

Re: So, What's The Last DVD/Blu-ray You Bought?

My season 14 Blu-ray turned up the other day. Very nice packaging, though for the price you would expect it to be. Started watching Hand of Fear, a serial I haven't seen for a good twenty years (at least!). It looks pretty good, and watching an episode on a hot summer's evening it almost felt like g...

Re: What Would it Take for You Switch On to Doctor Who?

Good writing, and an attitude adjustment to the show where it is not just about writers trying to show how clever they are.

But I was never really into NuWho anyway. Some great episodes, but they were islands in a sea of crap as far as I was concerned.

Re: Rewatch Doctor Who: The Deadly Assassin

Thoughts (ok, nitpicks) arising from The Deadly Assassin rewatch... I'm quite keen to give my thoughts, but not if everyone's going to accuse me of nitpicking every time I say anything vaguely negative. I had enough of that in 2005 when I was a lone voice saying "I'm not totally sure about this" an...

Re: Rewatch Doctor Who: The Deadly Assassin

I think it's one of the great Who stories. Like Paul, I prefer the Gallifrey-set snark to the Matrix action, but it's all good. The high-collar Time Lord robes are a design classic, the mythology building is wonderful, the dialogue superb. I do find it clever that the 4th Doctor's eccentric outfit c...

Re: Favourite Philosophical Razor?

Hanlon's razor has been a favourite of mine for years. As someone who tends towards paranoia, I find it useful to remember that people on the whole tend to be slack and incompetent rather than evil and scheming.

Re: General SF Thread

Anyone who hasn't tried the German-made Netflix time-bending drama Dark should give that a shot. I've just finished the third and final season, and though I'm not really sure that the whole thing hangs together as much as I'd hoped, It's still been a great ride. Really good acting, no overly self-aw...

The score for Vertigo is amazing. Just incredibly atmospheric. I don't own many film scores, but Vertigo I've had for years.

Re: The BEST movie you've never seen

We can't watch Citizen Wells as it first appeared then because it accumalted several artistic and technical traits that had not converged until that point. John ford had used muslin ceilings to hide microphones and had ceilings built as part of sets. Other directors had shot low down to converge th...

Especially as it had an article in it saying that Davros just might come back one day, despite being very dead in GENESIS.......

Re: What's The Last TV Show You Watched?

I've finished re-watching season 2 of the German time-travel drama Dark, just in time for season 3 to drop on Saturday. It's complicated stuff, and a re-watch was necessary if I'm to have any chance of understanding season 3.

Re: B7 - Aftermath/Powerplay

What about that bit 15 mins in on the beach when Dayna is about to kill the guy he has just knocked out and he tells her not to bother? I suppose that is cold compared to Dayna wanting to kill everyone which is something that feels like a loose end. Dayna's father chides her for being so aggressive...

Re: THAT MCGANN TARDIS: Your View

I have to say I never liked the RTD room. The coral idea was truly the most pants. And bloody ugly. Console was ok with the rotor. The console looked nice from a distance. When you got close up you could see that it was made up of junkshop bric-a-brac rather than futuristic instruments, and that's ...

Re: THAT MCGANN TARDIS: Your View

No roundels are a deal-breaker for me. And I'm another one who hates the central column being a tube that descends from the ceiling - it feels like they copied it from Star Trek's warp core design. Altogether it's just to generically Victorian gothic and not enough Doctor Who. I'm a traditionalist a...

Re: B7 - Aftermath/Powerplay

Aftermath : Definitely one of the more interesting Blake's 7 episodes, with the show needing to re-establish characters, relationships, and motivations after having lost Gareth Thomas' Blake. It's a fun episode, with Paul Darrow reminding anyone who had forgotten that his Avon was always the most w...

Re: B7 - Star One

Well I re-watched this one today and it is one of the best Blake's 7 episodes, with good acting all round and very few flaws. Avon get's lots of great dialogue, whilst Travis' dialogue is wisely kept to a minimum. Blake gets a some good lines, but generally this episode is about taking Blake out of ...

Re: B7 - Star One

LURENA: Look out! [Avon shoots alien] LURENA: What are they? AVON: Unfriendly. Which is fortunate, really. They'd be difficult to love. Come on. That is one of my favourite pieces of Avon dialogue ever. Star One is one of the best B7 episodes. I haven't found time to rewatch it yet (decided to re-w...

Re: Rate "The Talons of Weng-Chiang"

I'm always torn on whether to give a great story a 9 or a 10. Today I gave this a 10. It's a great story with great performances. I loved the book before I saw the episodes on video, and I have to say it's got so many great ingredients: the Doctor in Sherlock Holmes getup, a disfigured war-criminal ...
