Re: Rate “The Timeless Children” (Part 2)

Hopefully it was all just a load of made-up nonsense by the Master.

Also - what was the point of the cybermen invading Gallifrey if it was a dead planet that wasn't even in the same universe as anywhere else?

Re: The "Timeless Child" Arc: What's All That About Then?

So, um, the revelation was that the Doctor was actually the genetic progenitor of the entire timelord race, something which he s(he) had no memory of, and neither does anyone else, as they're all dead and it wasn't in the matrix (apart from all the bits that were... which strangely the Doctor never ...

Series 12 (Season 38) - was it any good?

I fear it was the worst Dr Who season in a long long time... Series 11 / season 37 was wick, but at least in a sort of simple, childlike way - a succession of unambitious stories that merely weren't all that good. Series 12 / 38 was in my view considerably worse in that it combined the same poor act...

Re: Rate “The Timeless Children” (Part 2)

The other thing that made me facepalm was this secret crack squad of meddlin' Time Lords being called 'The Division', which rather reminded me of Dug & Dinsdale Piranha in Monty Python calling their operation 'The Operation', followed by 'The Other Operation'.

Re: Rate “The Timeless Children” (Part 2)

Every era seems to have its own canon, just think of them as separate universes and ignore the stuff you don't like. It did seem pointless to try and fix the Brain of Morbius thing but then bugger up that stuff, but the Morbius thing is more established. The Brain of Morbius was a great story (not ...

Re: Rate “The Timeless Children” (Part 2)

The Master acted like he was on coke.

The cyber-timelords' costumes looked like they were designed by someone on coke.

The lead cyberman sniffing at Yaz and Graham inside their cybersuits and not twigging there were humans inside was absutd.

Re: Rate “The Timeless Children” (Part 2)

overblown rubbish! Fundamentally, simply 'totally rewriting Doctor Who continuity' is not a good story. It's only of meta-interest to 'Doctor Who fans'. People became Doctor Who fans in the first place because it had good stories, well told. (And anyways - why would 'the Doctor remembering loads of ...

Re: Upscaling DVDs

well, HMDI is the superior way to connect, as with component, you're converting from digital to analogue, then the telly has to upscale the analogue. Does your player not have an HDMI output socket? I haven't noticed any particular difference between letting my player upscale things, or having the t...

Re: Is It Jodie or Is It the Scripts?

I think the scripts are often bad, but a charismatic actor can still make the show watchable even with a rubbish script - we have scores of past episodes over the past 50 years that prove this point. I'm afraid Jodie is not in that category - her performance and delivery are routinely making things ...

Re: Doctor Who - The Collection - Season 23

I finally started watching my Trial of a Timelord boxset. My impression of Ep.1 was actually pretty positive: the 5.1 surround sound mix is a nice upgrade (various radiophonic atmosphere and rain sound effects etc work so much more effectively in surround), the opening model shot is in true HD from ...

Re: Rate "Ascension of the Cybermen” (Part 1)

Yeah, the last scene where Brendon had gotten older than his parents was the point at which is no longer made sense and the viewer just resignedly has to go 'Oh well, I guess they'll explain that to us next week'

Re: Rate "Ascension of the Cybermen” (Part 1)

Admittedly there should have been some buildup, some getting to know the human survivors, some reason for the Doctor and friends to be there.... but I guess one can't expect too much in the way of story development from Mr Chibnall. Did they not get some co-ordinates or something last week at Lord ...

Re: Rate "Ascension of the Cybermen” (Part 1)

Talking of which, I did notice that Ryan seemed to - almost insultingly - be given less and less dialogue as the episode went on. He just seemed to be pulled along on the journey while a lot of what should have been Ryan's dialogue went to the younger lad's character. I thought Tosin just looked ge...

Re: Rate "Ascension of the Cybermen” (Part 1)

I thought that was quite enjoyable, although I'm not sure if the episode was great in itself or if it just felt great in contrast to most of the past two series. . yeah, it's difficult to be objective on that score :) But the fact is, most of us dutifully HAVE sat through nearly two full seasons of...

Re: Rate "Ascension of the Cybermen” (Part 1)

Good lord! A half-decent Dr Who episode!

I mean, it was actually quite exciting and dramatic, with a narrative that made sense and the characters not all being complete dicks! And was quite impressive visually!

Shame about the terrible Oirish accents - one of them even sounded Welsh.

Re: Rate "The Haunting of Villa Diodati"

However - I give it points for attempting to have the period characters speak and act as though they were from the period in question, and for having most of the cast dress to fit in. Shame the fam kept using 21st century slang, which everyone understood - those translation circuits must have worke...

Re: Rate "The Haunting of Villa Diodati"

Definitely damning with faint praise, but I think this episode was probably the only I've disliked least in this season so far... Nice period costumes, but I really disliked the way the Doctor & companions kept using anachronistic 21st century English and expecting the 19th century people to jus...
