Thanks to donations from members I've been able to move Planet Mondas to a faster server. But I'm still working on further improvements. Ad Revenue covers the server fees, but not my time, so if you like you can buy me a coffee, which will help fuel me! Thanks in advance! Mat Sadler (matjkd)

In a shock for me at least Andy Gill the guitarist for the band Gang of Four has died.

They only played at the Croxton, just up the road from where I live, in November.

The Doctor died with Capaldi. The Chibnall era is non-canon.

There are no Doctors before William Hartnell.

Without respect, we reject.

I really had no idea who she was but reading the articles about her since her death is just really sad.

One I missed from earlier in the week.

Andrew Weatherall, DJ and producer of the seminal Primal Scream album Screamadelica, has left us far too soon.

Freeman Dyson's gone.

As SF fans I expect everyone already knows that he was famous for practical plans to terraform Venus with blue-green algae and to convert Jupiter into a "Dyson Sphere" that would allow humanity to make use of the Sun's entire energy output. He also (if I remember correctly) co-authored a paper about the prospects for life continuing indefinitely into the very, very distant future. (A more practical prospect, I suspect, than Frank Tipler's immortality in the Big Crunch.)

Must admit, I had never heard of a Dyson Sphere until this episode of TNG aired...... :)

Yes, that's the normal SF interpretation of a Dyson sphere, as seen in Bob Shaw's "Orbitsville" and Larry Niven's "Ringworld" as well as on Star Trek. However I'm fairly sure the original concept was of a cloud of planetoids rather than a solid structure - which would also be far easier to manufacture, e.g. by breaking up some rocky planets or moons, covering them with solar panels, and putting them into orbits that would let them intercept a significant proportion of the star's entire energy output. Hence a sufficiently advanced civilisation's star would end up looking something like Betelgeuse, a red / infra-red supergiant (since the sphere or cloud would have to ultimately radiate waste heat away into space, and that's what we'd see).

It's been suggested that one way to detect alien civilisations is to look for stars that superficially resemble infra-red supergiants, but show other signs that they are actually surrounded by clouds of small objects. Dyson spheres or swarms could in theory be visible from a great distance, given sufficiently powerful telescopes, even perhaps in other galaxies. This was the reason for the excitement over KIC 8462852, at least amongst people who thought there was a remote chance of an alien civilisation existing that close to us in the galaxy (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabby%27s_Star#An_artificial_megastructure). Unsurprisingly there are explanations that don't involve aliens that may well turn out to be correct, but time will tell.

Legendary animation writer and one-time Big Finish author David Wise has died. He was largely responsible for writing the majority of episodes, and developing the characters and concepts from the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, he also wrote the most episodes of Generation One Transformers, including the final three episodes, and was responsible for Star Trek's first emmy win with the animated series episode "How Sharper Than A Serpent's Tooth?"
