Sad to hear of Paul Darrow's death. Great humour in interviews. Great performances that even if the show wasn't firing on all cylinders, Paul's Avon was always the highlight of those episodes.

Thanks to donations from members I've been able to move Planet Mondas to a faster server. But I'm still working on further improvements. Ad Revenue covers the server fees, but not my time, so if you like you can buy me a coffee, which will help fuel me! Thanks in advance! Mat Sadler (matjkd)

Really saddened to hear about this. Gutted in fact. I'll never forget him as Avon. Outstanding performance really wasn't it. Kinda stole the show. R.I.P Paul Darrow then. :(

Even the bad episodes of B7 were made worth while by Paul Darrow's Avon.

Nice little story from rapscallion - copied and pasted over from "Dropping like Flies...." thread in the Zero Room.

rapscallion wrote:I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Paul Darrow when I was at work one day. Must have been about 1997. He was in a play at one of our local theatres.

Me and a colleague saw him come in with a couple of friends (I worked in a music and video retail store) and we recognised him instantly. So we snuck round to the soundtrack section and grabbed a TV themes compilation with the Blake's 7 theme tune on and played it on the overhead speakers. To be honest, we weren't sure if we were doing the right thing by putting 'his' theme tune on. He may have flung his hands up in the air and exclaimed "Can I not go anywhere....?!!"

But he came over to us at the tillpoint with a big smile on his face, shook our hands and said "You recognised me then lads." It was more of a statement than a question. I remember nodding and stammering a "yeh. How are you?" He stopped for a small chat and then rejoined his friends.

I just had this image of him after that meeting that he was such a decent gentleman, and have always held him in high regard.
Rest in peace Paul.

Lovely stuff.

I was 4 years old when I sat and watched the first episode of Blakes 7 with my dad, it became both our favourite TV programme, and Paul Darrow was without a doubt one of the very best things about it. I could quote Avon's lines all day.

He was fantastic in The Legend of Robin Hood too. "My rank entitles me to the AXE!!" What a way to go.

Yep. Lovely feller. Was never a Blakes 7 fan as such, and yet I always watched it.

A few years ago he came to one of the Hoovers evenings in Derby. And he was great. A few months later we were waiting in line for another evening later on and we heard he'd lost his legs to that awful Raynauds disease, and were devastated. And then next thing I know he was on a themed Pointless Celebrities large as life.

The guy was a fighter obviously, and we've lost one of the best.

No.
The key to usable HUMINT (Human Intelligence) is distinguishing the real, highly placed sources from the bullsh*tting wannabes who pretend they’re highly placed sources by making sh*t up

Yes when I was a you boy watching I actually thought the series was about him more than Blake.
O-Ren Ishii: You didn't think it was gonna be that easy, did you?
The Bride: You know, for a second there, yeah, I kinda did.
O-Ren Ishii: Silly rabbit.

Terrible news, so sad, along with Tom Baker Paul was a screen hero to me growing up.
Have enjoyed his performances on the Big Finish audios, but now it really is the end of B7.
Hope BF doesn't try and continue without Avon, just won't be the same. R.I.P. Paul Darrow.

Has someone produced a cartoon of the Pearly Gates and "Avon calling!" ?

Paul was the best thing about the awful Timelash.

He really let rip as Maylin Tekker.

The audio commentary on TIMELASH is worth a listen.

Paul, Colin and Nicola.

PAUL: Lame Sith? Lame This?

COLIN: Cracks are starting to appear on this thin ice!

Paul loses interest in the entire story after his character's dramatic weight loss.

COLIN: (Mock berating) Just because Tekker's shuffled off this mortal coil!

He and Jackie Pearce are also a great team on the B7 ASSASSIN commentary. Jackie really takes against the actress playing Piri....

JACKIE: Not terribly good, darling! ..... Oh do shut up!!

PIRI: (Snuggling up to Tarrant) I don't really like clever people.

PAUL: Well you've come to the right place.

Even if you hate these two stories, do give the audio commentaries a try.

I hope Big Finish don't embarrass themselves by daring to try and recast the role of Avon. It wouldn't be fair on whoever they picked. Maybe "nobody is indispensable", but I do think Paul was irreplaceable. :(
