Columbo (and Mrs)

Postby ericthehalfabee » Thu Sep 06, 2018 10:08 am

A few years ago I bought the box set. I got up to the Johnny Cash one (something to do with a parachute?) then drifted away. I’ve had the nagging feeling to go back and start again for a few months.

Anyway, a thread to chat about Columbo - and I’ll stick some thoughts in here as and when the rewatch begins. I’m looking forward to the Donald Pleasance wine one - BRILLIANT.

Oh and the Robert Culp(rit) ones...

And the Patrick Macnee ones...

Thanks to donations from members I've been able to move Planet Mondas to a faster server. But I'm still working on further improvements. Ad Revenue covers the server fees, but not my time, so if you like you can buy me a coffee, which will help fuel me! Thanks in advance! Mat Sadler (matjkd)

Don’t forget the Patrick McGoohan ones.

They’re the ones I really remember.

I always liked Colombo, but I haven’t seen it in years.

Maybe I too should check out the DVD boxset.

I've got the DVD Boxset (there is a blu ray set out there now) and tend to dip in and out of them, not watching them in series order.

One of my faves is an episode called Now You See Him, which features Jack Cassidy (father of David) as a magician with a dark past.

Oh, and the great Bill Shatner appears in two of them, always worth a watch.

And the Big Yin, Billy Connelly appears in one of the final ones as a nasty film music composer, Which was directed by Patrick McGoohan..

Wasn’t Macnee in some, or am I imagining that?

The blurays have actually been released here. At least a couple of seasons.

Yes - he did one I think. But I still wasn’t thinking of him.

Here we go then:

https://columbophile.wordpress.com/2016 ... ou-decide/

McGoohan killed 4.

Culp killed 3 - (and appeared as a guest in another one. I was going to suggest that in that one the twist was that he didn't do it, but then I realised you know who did it from the start!)

Cassidy killed 3.

And Mrs Columbo...

I only watched half an episode really. A 24 year old Kate Mulgrew married to that one eyed Mac wearing slob? Blimey, he must have been hung like a rogue elephant

However, according to the Wikipedia entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mrs._Columbo they soon divorced. That makes me happy. Balance is restored :)

Columbo is an exceptional series. The Johnny Cash one is superb.

That complete Columbo set is getting a release here in Australia, but it isn’t half pricey!

Well, I ripped the wrapper off me Columbo complete series DVD boxset thingy and have been giving that a right old caning. I'd forgotten how well made the show was, good quality stuff innit, it's very addictive. I've got up to season 2 now and just finished watching the one with Leonard Nimoy in called A Stitch in Crime.

Favourite episodes so far, the first one (on Disc 1) with Jack Cassidy in (Murder by the Book , directed by Steven Speilberg no less) and the second which had Robert Culp in (Death Lends a Hand), thought both of those actors made great villains. I also quite liked the one with Roddy McDowall in (Short Fuse) Wasn't so keen on the one in London (Dagger of the Mind) too much a stereotypical portrait of England I felt, to the point of being laughable.

I’ve been binging on the box set too, and have knocked off season 1 in no time. They feel a bit light on the sleuthing compared to later ones. My favourites so far are the first pilot (probably because Columbo’s snappier, which is a nice point of difference) and again the first two proper episodes. Oh I liked the last one too, with the concrete piles.

Onwards with John Cassavetes. I can’t remember when the one with Donald Pleasance is, but that’s the cleverest :)

Oh no....

Please, no!

Moffat and Gattis are at it again.......

Just hope the rights to it continue to stay out of their reach......

The pair did, however, confess that they wanted to bring back another iconic detective: Columbo.

Moffat said: “I really tried with Columbo. I did have a decent go at it, but the rights are really tied up.

“I think it’s a devastatingly brilliant format. My plan was to put Peter Falk to the back of my mind and start again from the beginning. Maybe just go madly different.

“But the one thing Columbo has to be is the most unprepossessing, seemingly unimpressive sadist you’ll ever meet. All that ‘Oh, just one more thing’ stuff isn’t absent-mindedness. He’s such a sadist.”

Here's an idea for Moffhack & Gatiss…

Create something original for once...

Doubtless they would change the gender, of course - and think that a female take on Columbo is a brilliantly original idea of their own that no one else has ever done before! :(

If someone was to make a new Columbo film/series, Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner in the MARVEL films) would be a brilliant choice...

No need to get your coat, Heccypoo - as other people have had that very idea - to the point where Ruffalo once got tackled about swirling rumours regarding him taking the role...... :)
