Tenth Doctor = Worst Doctor

For many people of my generation, David Tennant is their doctor. He was their introduction to the character and is the one they think of when you mention Doctor Who. Even though he's my least favourite I can see why other rate him so highly.
It's like what Desmond Llewelyn once said when asked who the best James Bond was "the best one is the one you saw first".

Thanks to donations from members I've been able to move Planet Mondas to a faster server. But I'm still working on further improvements. Ad Revenue covers the server fees, but not my time, so if you like you can buy me a coffee, which will help fuel me! Thanks in advance! Mat Sadler (matjkd)

Well the one I saw first was Bill, and before 2006 Tom was my favourite doctor, but once Tennant came along, he quickly became my favourite.

I did like Tennant at first, I still do in some ways but it depends on the story. However I slowly began to dislike him due to his constant speeches about how "I never would" even though he also said things like "no second chances". It made his character inconsistent and hypocritical. I don't blame Tennant though, he's a good actor who did the best he could with the material given to him.

The one I saw first was William Hartnell. However I don't put him as my favourite Doctor. He is usually in 3rd or 4th place.

I could not have put it better. I think he's a very nice actor who did well with what he was given. It's just that I didn't think much of what he was given!

In my case that would be Davison and I place him 9th in my list of favourites. I dare say he will drop to 10th place when Capaldi takes over.

Oh yes that was the main problem, of course. I don't blame him for his interpretation (or his accent), these were things foisted upon him along with the naff scripts.

So in your opinion Liz, would he have been better off using his native accent (regardless of where the blame sits for him not doing so)?

saying Tennant was the worst doctor is at best poppycock and at worst the early signs of a monumental meltdown. He had humour , pathos and gravitas and made you care about the Doctor and his burdens.

Well the bit about the accent was an afterthought, hence the brackets. But I think his native accent would have worked fine (especially if we were told that the Doctor's accent had always been down to the telepathic circuits, or something).

Then again there's all those English-speaking aliens...

Anybody else seen this? http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2013-10- ... doctor-who It probably deserves its own thread, but I thought it presumptuous of me to start one. I can't tell if he's just trolling as usual or committing Tumblr suicide.

(On topic, Ten's the closest thing I have to a favorite Doctor, but I totally get why other people hate him.)

I don't know whose to blame for why Tennent's Doctor is awful, but, he makes most amateur dramatic 'actors' look like Derek Jacobi or John Hurt.

He is just awful. Over the top, and about as subtle 'as a slice of lemon wrapped around a large gold brick' (to paraphrase some block who wrote about a restaurateur's guide to the milky way or something).

Why act when you can chew the scenery? :Tardis:

He was a habitual over-actor, but I think in moments of real human drama he proved himself. Doomsday, his scenes with Wilf in The End of Time, and as has been mentioned, his performance as John Smith. And I'm not sure it's of a piece, but I think he was very good with Alex Kingston. (I know his detractors hate most of those moments, but I insist the acting was good.)

And I'd say Eccleston and Smith have had their share of embarrassing moments, too, as much as I like them. Smith in particular's gone a great deal more over-the-top with painfully forced clowning in later seasons.

I thought Eccleston was wooden at best. The only time he seemed (to me anyway) to actually put anything into his performance was Dalek.

Matt Smith started well and was (again in my opinion) the first Doctor in NuWho that felt 'right'.

He's become a caricature of what people think the Doctor should be.

That's a shame.

Of course, the "awful" acting if David Tennant, that's why the RSC keep hiring him...

Theatre acting needs you to overdo it, you have to be ' bigger' as it has to carry to the back of a theatre etc.

TV and movie acting needs subtlety as the camera is right in your face.

I have seen Tennent in other TV shows where he's been OK.

I watched Casanova when he was cast as the Doctor and thought, this looks hopeful.

I was incredibly disappointed watching the Christmas Invasion.

I think it was Anthony Hopkins who described theatre actors as 'honking and hooting' as they work on the stage.

If you like your actors full of ham and gurning all the time, go Tennent... :doc5:
