No its not recent, Its nothing new, the Star Trek TNG story Times Arrow springs to mind, with Ginan as a woman of society and not a slave in the 1800s (or whenever it was set) in the south of America and that was made over 20 years ago.

Well actually that story was set in San Francisco in the 1890s in California a time when not only A) slavery had been abolished but B) in a state that entered the union as a free state.
You don't have to hate the new series here but it helps.

Thanks to donations from members I've been able to move Planet Mondas to a faster server. But I'm still working on further improvements. Ad Revenue covers the server fees, but not my time, so if you like you can buy me a coffee, which will help fuel me! Thanks in advance! Mat Sadler (matjkd)

Yes. You can't see what she's doing. It's a fan myth.
(Doctor Who) has been hijacked and redefined as a lucrative modern franchise. They've literally taken a square peg and painfully made it fit a round hole by taking enormous liberties with much of its fundamental essence. There's no turning back now.

There was a black professional class, some of them quite wealthy (the "talented tenth") in late 19th century America. Social mixing between blacks and whites was extremely rare, though, even in states like California which entered the Union without slavery.

Capaldi asked to stay on after series 10, but hasn't made his mind up yet.
“I’ve been asked to stay on,” Capaldi told RadioTimes.com, “but it’s such a long time before I have to make that decision.

“Steven’s been absolutely wonderful, so I love working with him. Chris is fantastic, and I think he’s a hugely talented guy.

“I don’t know where the show’s gonna go then. I don’t know. I have to make up my mind, and I haven’t yet.”

He concluded: “As Steven will tell you, it’s very difficult to say goodbye.”

TBH, I'd like to see him go with moff, let the new guy have a clean slate and totally change direction, the way WHO has always been, out with the old in with new
I saw 'The Purge, Election Year' last night, I couldn't make out whether it was fiction or a party political broadcast on behalf of the Republican party...

I know actor speak. He is gone....which is fine. Nothing against him personally but his tenure was a disaster.

Let him go. It was a decent run but his Doctor blends into the woodwork of each story far too much. Much as I love Pertwee, Capaldi's Doctor feels more like the spiritual antithesis of the Third Doctor rather than a memorable successor. Honestly Pertwee was just so much better at this role - and so much more watchable.

His tenure was an unmitigated disaster, but it was not his fault. I hope he stays and gets a chance to have some good stories which clearly ain't gonna happen as long as Moff is making the show.

That guy drank the Kool-Aid and no mistake.

About the new companion that's due to be announced...

Leela was pretty popular, once, and very different from any of the recent companions.

However, it's easier for the writers if the companion is contemporary is since it means they start off knowing roughly the same as the average viewer. We don't get scenes with the Doctor explaining modern day technology the viewer already know about to someone from the past, or explaining future technology to a companion from the 587th century, who should really already know all about it.

Sticking to contemporary companions then, Rani or Clyde from the SJA could be interesting, and a little different. They're both from ethnic minorities, and Clyde isn't even female.

Alternately, they could go for a companion from the regions, and make them male to help them stand out from the recent run. Northern Ireland might be a little touchy, but how about a Welsh postman or a Yorkshire shepherd, complete with sheepdog?

The smart money appears to be on Rakhee Thakrar. No I'd never heard of her either. Some Eastenders actress apparently.

Following quote taken from the article as linked by Heccypoo:
Now, Blessed has his heart set on the lead role. “I would love to play the Doctor, absolutely”, he said. If he did nab the part, at the age of 79, Blessed would be the oldest actor to ever play the iconic Time Lord/mad man in a box.

Lovely to see you back Ianj
