Re: Rate "Oxygen"

9/10 -- That was a corker! Much better than my prediction last week based on the preview. *Still not sure what the suits were doing to kill the wearers, looked like an electrical arc at first but the black lines on the skin looked and behaved exactly like the neurotropic virus the Cybermen were usin...

Re: Rate "Knock Knock"

Gave it a 7. Some nice Cartmel era vibes and Capaldi was being very McCoy-like. However, they wasted way too much time on the setup/buildup of renting the house and getting sorted and left precious little for the real meat and explanations. As others have said, it needed a second part or needed the ...

Re: Rate "Hell Bent"

Why would time lord society change to become gender fluid? What advantage would that be? I can think of one scenario: Lack of suitable mates. It's not technically canon that Time Lords can't sexually reproduce (Lungbarrow be damned, the new series has shied away from mentioning looms). Parthenogene...

Re: Rate "Hell Bent"

[Genesis [of the Daleks].....doesn't rewrite anything. Different time....Daleks could be 1000' s of years later. Deadly assassin was a view of galifrey we had never seen that added to the lore...not rewrote it. This episode just rode roughshod over previous stories. Just my opinion. That isn't true...

Re: Rate "Hell Bent"

I am not sure what I have just watched, but it was flippin awful. A lot of stuff happening for absolutely NO APPARENT REASON, Clara's death utterly cheapend, I am rather confused as to what the hybrid actually was and what happeded to Rassilon.... . I have totally forgotten when the Doctor stopped ...

Re: Rate "Hell Bent"

Also depressing -- we got to see more of the Doctor's crappy boyhood house set (oooo! he's up in the loft with no walls! Now he's OUTSIDE eating soup!) than we did of the GIANT TIMELORD CITADEL which apparently has only three rooms. At least Arc of Infinity showed us a corridor or two and had some ...

Guess you missed the shot from the other side that showed loads of other buildings behind the citadel?
Nah, I saw it.

Wouldn't it have been cool if they actually went there and met some average Gallifreyans though?

Re: Rate "Hell Bent"

My impression of this was it was a great collection of set pieces -- We get that CGI of the weirdly skinny citadel dome on Gallifrey trotted out again (the fans who make endless wanky 'coming soon' youtube trailers love you Steve!), and it makes it actually look like a very small place where the Tim...

Capaldi is amazing. When he died on the Tardis floor. What a performance. Murry Gold nails it for the first time in YEARS. reminded me of the soundtrack of There will be blood in some places with the screeching violins Not screeching violins, it's an Ondes Martenot. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On...

Re: Rate "Face The Raven"

Capaldi was great in this but my God, whoever wrote this had no regard for the patience of the viewing audience... the build up to the ramp up of the beginning of the start of the death scene was agonizingly snail paced. Literally a bunch of talking heads with nothing interesting happening on the sc...

Re: Rate "Sleep No More"

When Doctor Who has some of it's more experimental episodes -- or rather it's putting it's own stamp on someone else's great idea -- these episodes are sure to polarize opinions in the short term but many somehow manage to come out looking better in the long term. * There's a curious similarity betw...

Re: Rate "The Zygon Invasion"

What struck me was the number of female characters. It starts with Osgood, then goes to the children in the playground (children being a recurring theme in Moffat Who) and the two little girl Zygon commanders. Then we get (not necessarily in this order) UNIT - two women, the drone "pilot" - a woman...

Re: Rate "The Zygon Invasion"

I can feel a curate's egg coming on here. You can see it's a good story, but something's happened to make it not quite work (for me, at least). It's almost a parable of the story itself, a story turned ... alien. But then Neil Cross, of "Luther" fame, wrote "Rings of Akhnaten" (can't be bothered ch...

So the Zygons no longer operate by the biological rules established in their one and only debut story... Why? Re: Ongoing Omni-Rumour Discussion Part 2

No, it was "On Her Majesties' Secret Service". Saw it some years back at the thirtieth anniversary of it's release. Love that film and the book is even better. Certainly one of the best of the Flemming books. +1 for OHMSS. George always seems to get the short shrift. Yet, I think his portrayal was ...

Re: Rate "The Girl Who Died"

"Making good use of two parters" should not involve ripping off _The Ark_ for three stories in a row. Enough of this here-are-the-consequences-of-your-actions-1000-years-from-now garbage. It's lazy writing from a show about time travel that used to use timey-wimeys sparingly like a fine spice. A lit...

Re: Rate "Before The Flood"

The Doctor makes a point about being caught up in events and being a part of them, which is the reason why the TARDIS refuses to leave and rings the cloister bell -- if anything the TARDIS is the one that tipped off the Doctor as to the solution and he just found an easier way to pluck info about hi...

Re: Rate "Under The Lake"

8/10 Nice meat to the story, with a Doctor acting Doctor-like. There was something very evocative of the classic series but I can't put my finger on it. Incidental music reminded me a bit of _Terminus_, set design evoked _Warriors of the Deep_ without all the bright lights. What is it with Moffat an...

Re: Rate "The Magician's Apprentice"

Anyone notice the (glaring?) continuity error? We heard the Seventh Doctor from Rememberance speaking but the events of Remembrance didn't happen to Davros -- or at least THIS Davros who is clearly post-Revelation but has not been converted to Emperor. I'll at least wait until Part 2 before I declar...
