Jeez, his keyboard playing was such a mainstay of their early stuff (at least - I kind of lost interest after "No more heroes"), together with that meaty bass sound and the growling vocals (and slightly naff lyrics), it more or less defined them, for me at least.

Speaking of naff lyrics, this extract from "Down in the Sewer" seems slightly prophetic now:

"They got sharp teeth
Deep breath
And lots of diseases
People say you shouldn't stay down here too long
Lose your sense of light and dark
Lose your sense of smell
I tell you what I'm gonna do
Gonna make love to a water rat or two
and breed a family
they'll be called the survivors"

I know they recorded little of value in thirty or so years and Florian left the band years ago, But he and Ralf created a whole new genre of 'EM' really which was the basis for much of the 'percussive' electronic new wave and subsequent dance music which followed (I think I can say that although the story is far more complex). Very sad as I loved Kraftwerk in the 'classic band line-up ' era.

Damn! Much as I think Ringo Starr is a nice chap, Mike Angelis was by far the better narrator of "Thomas the Tank Engine". (And believe me I've sat through a lot of episodes...)

A small trip down memory line, I mean lane...

Yes, the girls watched this religiously when they were little ‘uns and it was sooo much better than Dora or Hi5.
