A suggestion....

How about NOT giving Peter a regeneration?

Just have him end an adventure, then have him give a beautiful, poignant and moving speech that truly sums up his Doctor and then simply have him taking off in the Tardis, disappearing into legend...

People tuning in on Christmas Day, expecting to see Capaldi regenerate, will get a baffling surprise.

The post broadcast chatter, instead of being about "how disappointing the regeneration was!" would instead be along the lines of: "WTF?!?!? He DIDN'T even regenerate! WTF?!?!?" This would also cause additional speculation that he just MIGHT be in the start of the next season. etc.

Then start Chibnall's era with a mystery as to why a new Doctor (and perhaps even a new companion) is just suddenly, inexplicably THERE.

Then just leave it hanging that the regeneration was something TERRIBLE and truly tragic and that this new Doctor does NOT want to talk about it AT ALL - EVER! - thank you very much!

It would make Peter's era far less finite - at least in the mind's eye - and this would also give Capaldi the freedom to always come back for a guest appearance or reunion and it wouldn't matter what age he was, because it would simply be BEFORE his TRULY HORRIFIC regeneration.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CAPALDI DOCTOR could be the new talking point and food for fan speculation, a la the Time War in 2005, while also allowing for additional speculation that there might even have been a Doctor or two between Capaldi and Chibnall's Doctor....

There is nothing to say that a future showrunner could not invite Capaldi back a la Paul McGann to FINALLY show his fate.

Having him back, for one night only, a few years down the line. New costume. New look.

Even if he was a lot older, just imagine how any future Big Finish's would fit in there neatly!

And even if we never saw his fate, the imagination would do the rest.

We don't HAVE to know everything immediately.

And maybe it is the least the BBC can do for him as a mark of respect.

BEEB: "We've not quite finished with you YET, Peter!"

Rather than hurriedly shuffling him. almost dismissively, offstage to become just yet another Doctor that happened to be on telly during those particular three years.

And it could make the 60th Anniversary in 2023 more interesting!

Just an idea anyway...

So, what do people think?

Uh... no.
(Doctor Who) has been hijacked and redefined as a lucrative modern franchise. They've literally taken a square peg and painfully made it fit a round hole by taking enormous liberties with much of its fundamental essence. There's no turning back now.

There would be endless fan theories about how he wasn't really the Doctor and it wasn't Doctor Who any longer. It wouldn't be worth the hassle I reckon. Nice idea, though.

I didn't think of, or allow for that, I must admit! :)

Isn't that pretty much true of everything to do with Doctor Who? For example, one of the most popular eras (certainly my favourite) basically rehashes a series of classic horror stories.

how about....NOBODY takes over as The Doctor ?

we have the new series start...everybody is awaiting the new Doctor...who fails to turn up !

Capaldi regenerates...into nothing

instead we concentrate on the 'feisty female' companion, her friends, and her family etc...
who live soapy style lives on a council estate

hence the show title; Doctor...who ???

it breaks down taboos, challenges the viewer, takes it into a new idiom etc...
