REVIEW: ATTACK OF THE CYBERMEN

Attack of the Cybermen titlesDoctor Who fandom is a funny old place. Like a primitive tribe, it was born in the squalor of fanzines in the 1970’s and saw a particular generation effectively enforce the tribal rules and set the guidelines for what Doctor Who was, even when those guidelines flew right in the face of the reality of the series itself. When this generation started becoming cynical teenagers and disillusioned adults, they turned on the series that they professed to love. The magical, imaginative, inspired and monstrously successful Williams era was silly, and as for the 80s…! Anything that came after this generation’s own personal Golden Age was deemed inferior to their own “era” – generally either Pertwee and/or Hinchcliffe – while any of the absolute howlers in those times (Mutants, Time Monster, Android Invasion, Hand of Fear et al) were quietly overlooked.

Sixth Doctor and PeriThe prejudices and often highly questionable tastes laid down in those first years of fandom remain today, lingering on like a bad smell, and while there is no shortage of stories that cry out for a more sensible revisionist attitude to be brought to bear on them, I chose Attack of the Cybermen for one simple reason – it was the first, but certainly not the last, time that I realised that conventional fan wisdom and anything resembling reality were often poles apart.

As a new young fan in the late 80s, Doctors other than number 7 were viewed on VHS, either the slow trickle of official releases or more often the copies recorded for me by a new fan friend. Even at that age I was already aware of a lot of the Official Fan History, in this case that Colin Baker was a crap Doctor who had crap stories. A quarter of a century later this view remains largely entrenched in the fan sphere, and one of the most commonly slated stories of his tenure is Attack of the Cybermen.

Attack Cyber Leader and Cyber ControllerNo particularly sensible reason has ever been offered for this continual attack (ho, ho) however. Of the few attempts that are offered (beyond the fact that controversial Who fan figure Ian Levine was involved in it, which seems to be the main “real” reason for the disdain it inexplicably attracts) the main objections appear to be violence and continuity. The former is a case of massive hypocrisy, with most of the anti-80s brigade being the type who spontaneously ejaculate over the frequently very violent Hinchcliffe era, while the second certainly makes little sense and holds no water whatsoever. As a young fan upon first seeing Attack, I had never seen nor read The Tenth Planet, Tomb of the Cybermen or even Resurrection of the Daleks, and yet none of the continuity points touched upon in the story were even remotely confusing to me, probably because anything that matters is explained quite satisfactorily within the narrative.

Attack of the CybermenSo if most of the criticisms are nonsense (as indeed they are), what is Attack really like then, in terms of the things that really matter; performances, production, script and entertainment value? Funnily enough the answer to all is “top notch”. Attack features some of the greatest guest performances in the series, from Maurice Colbourne’s cool and cold Lytton, Michael Attwell’s unstable Bates, and Brian Glover’s hilariously down-to-Earth Griffiths. Strong actors bringing to life strong characters, who are given some of the most quotable dialogue of any story outside of a Robert Holmes script. Production values are well above par, with the backstreets and sewers of London, as well as the mist-shrouded world of Telos, all realised convincingly and atmospherically. The Cybermen are at their nastiest, Colin Baker is giving a tremendously strong and confident performance in his first “proper” story, and between the great guest actors, dialogue, strong direction and plenty of action, Attack is certainly high in entertainment value.

Lytton and CybermenOn first viewing, I was quite taken aback by how good and high quality Attack really was, away from the warped prejudices and even more skewed priorities of the fandom gestalt. Twenty-five years later very little has changed. Fandom still has its sacrificial lambs and scapegoats, irrational and inane though they may be, and Attack of the Cybermen remains unadulterated good Doctor Who.

The BBC have issued a press release re it’s scheduling to celebrate 50 years of Doctor Who:

[singlepic id=399 w=320 h=329 float=left]Fifty years of Doctor Who to culminate in The Day Of The Doctor.

The countdown starts here as the BBC reveals its plans to take over TV and radio to mark the Doctor’s 50th anniversary.

With special programmes planned across the BBC, the celebrations will peak on 23 November with the anniversary episode, revealed as The Day Of The Doctor. Starring Matt Smith, David Tennant and Jenna Coleman with Billie Piper and John Hurt, the special for BBC One has been confirmed as feature-length, with 75 minutes of adventure.

Matt Smith, who plays the Doctor, says:

The Day Of The Doctor is nearly here! Hope you all enjoy. There’s lots more coming your way, as the countdown to the 50th begins now.

Each channel will be home to unique content, celebrating the wealth of history and talent from the last 50 years.

BBC TWO

BBC Two will broadcast a number of new commissions, focusing on telling the story behind the show. For one night only, Professor Brian Cox will take an audience of celebrity guests and members of the public on a journey into the wonderful universe of the Doctor, from the lecture hall of the Royal Institution of Great Britain (1×60 minutess). Drawing on the latest theories, as well as 200 years of scientific discoveries and the genius of Einstein, Brian tries to answer the classic questions raised by the Doctor: Can you really travel in time? Does extra-terrestrial life exist in our galaxy? And how do you build something as fantastical as the TARDIS?

In an hour-long special, BBC Two’s flagship arts programme The Culture Show presents Me, You And Doctor Who (1×60 minutes), with lifelong fan Matthew Sweet exploring the cultural significance of the BBC’s longest running TV drama, arguing that it’s one of the most important cultural artefacts of modern Britain. Put simply, Doctor Who matters. He’ll examine how the show has become a cultural force in its own right and tell the stories of some of the unsung cultural heroes, who pioneered its innovative music, design and storytelling.

BBC Two wraps up its coverage with the previously announced An Adventure In Space and Time (1×90 minutes), which will tell the story of the genesis of Doctor Who and the many personalities involved. Written by Mark Gatiss, the drama stars David Bradley (the Harry Potter films); Brian Cox (The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Identity), Jessica Raine (Call The Midwife) and Sacha Dhawan (History Boys, Last Tango In Halifax).

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer of Doctor Who, says:

Fifty years has turned Doctor Who from a television show into a cultural landmark. Personally I can’t wait to see what it becomes after a hundred.

BBC FOUR

BBC Four will introduce audiences to the first Doctor, William Hartnell, with a special re-run of the first-ever story, which marked the start of 50 years of history. The four episodes are being shown in a restored format, not previously broadcast in the UK.

CBBC

There will also be programmes across CBBC with 12 Again (1×30 minutes) bringing together CBBC’s super-fan Chris Johnson, impressionist Jon Culshaw, Tommy Knight (Luke Smith), Warwick Davis (Porridge), Neve McIntosh (Madame Vastra), Dan Starkey (Strax) Louise Jameson (Leela) and the seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, to share their memories of watching TV’s top Time Lord when they were young.

Blue Peter will launch an exciting new competition giving viewers aged between six and 14 the opportunity to design a new gadget that will become part of the iconic science fiction series. Two live Blue Peter specials will see presenters Barney, Lindsey and Radzi joined by aliens and monsters, with viewers challenging Matt Smith to answer their Doctor Who questions.

BBC THREE

BBC Three will be home to several exciting entertainment commissions. Audiences will be encouraged to get involved and vote in Doctor Who: Monsters And Villains Weekend, as we countdown to the top Doctor Who monster. For those less familiar with the show, Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide will introduce fans and viewers to a wealth of archive material and act as a guide to all things Who. A further exciting commission to be announced later this year will see the celebrations finish with a bang.

Danny Cohen, Director of BBC Television, says:

Doctor Who is a titan of British television and I’m incredibly proud to have it on the BBC. It’s an astonishing achievement for a drama to reach its 50th anniversary. I’d like to thank every person – on both sides of the camera – who has been involved with its creative journey over so many years.

It’s not just TV where audiences will be able join in the celebrations; programming across Radio 2, Radio 1 and Radio 4 Extra will also mark the 50th.

RADIO TWO

BBC Radio 2 will ask Who Is The Doctor? in a 90-minute documentary featuring newly recorded interviews and exclusive archive material. The programme will look at the lasting appeal of Doctor Who and ask how much of its continued success can be attributed to its basic formula.

In The Blagger’s Guide To Doctor Who, David Quantick will give the iconic Doctor the Blagger’s treatment. He’ll be finding out the answers to questions such as, why do Americans think Tom Baker is still Doctor Who? How many Doctors have there really been? Were the Daleks really named after an encyclopaedia?

Finally, Graham Norton will be broadcasting his weekly Radio 2 show live (Saturday 23 November, 10am) from the Doctor Who Celebration in London. In a special three-hour show, Graham will take a ride in the TARDIS and will also be chatting with some of the series’ stars and fans.

RADIO ONE

Music is a key part of Doctor Who, from the famous theme tune to soaring melodies, but the show has also inspired a whole new phenomenon – Time Lord Rock (TROCK). Radio 1 will look at this genre of music inspired by the Doctor and his journeys through space and time with a 60-minute documentary.

RADIO FOUR EXTRA

Meanwhile, Radio 4 Extra travels back to 1963 with a three-hour special programme, Who Made Who?, to look at the world that inspired the television series. Doctor Who may have come from other times, but his roots were very much in the present of 1960s Britain. This distinctive programme combines audio from the archive, new interviews and extracts from audio versions of Doctor Who. Additionally, the station will broadcast readings and dramas featuring the great Doctor.

There will also be special content across the Doctor Who website and on BBC iPlayer.

The official BBC Doctor Who website reads:

As we’ve previously reported, after four incredible years aboard the TARDIS, the Christmas episode will be Matt’s swansong as the Time Lord. Lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat has previously commented on Matt’s departure, telling us, ‘…great actors always know when it’s time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break, as we say goodbye to number Eleven.’

But there’s a lot more to come before Matt bows out…

The Doctor is back on BBC One on 23 November for the 50th anniversary special before returning for the momentous Christmas adventure.

FIRST DRAFT SCRIPT OF THE TENTH PLANET DISCOVERED

[singlepic id=396 w=320 h=235 float=left]

Author Michael Seely, who is working on a biography of Kit Pedler, has unearthed a draft script for the final episode of the William Hartnell era, The Tenth Planet. The story is significant because it introduces the concept of regeneration, the Doctor being able to completely change his appearance, and marks the introduction of one of the Doctor’s most memorable and enduring adversaries – the Cybermen.

The newly discovered draft script is intriguing because it was written before the decision to write out the lead actor.

Michael Seely, said:

I found this script and two more from ‘The Moonbase’ (known then as ‘The Return Of The Cybermen’) among a very large collection of Kit’s papers which one of his children had kept in their attic,” explains Seely. “As I looked through it, I realised it was the first draft [script editor and co-writer] Gerry Davis prepared when Kit fell ill in June 1966.

The structure is more or less the same, though a lot of the dialogue is different. Some things were cut, especially involving the Cybermen. For example, the Cybermen planned to convert [companion] Polly and the Doctor into Cybermen towards the end of the story, and kept them prisoner in what they described as a waiting room. The most eye-catching difference is what didn’t happen at the end of the episode.

Pedler’s script was written in June 1966 and rehearsals for the story commenced on September 14th, indicating Hartnell’s decision to leave the programme was made quite late in the day. In fact Hartnell’s wife wrote in her diary that he told her he would be leaving the show on July 16th.

Other documents have also come to light including five original storylines for Doomwatch, a series Pedler co-created with Gerry Davis, along with ideas for other TV shows, two unrecorded radio plays, and various unfinished books and short stories.
