DAY OF THE DALEKS EVENT REVIEW

DWASAs a Doctor Who fan I feel it’s my solemn duty to find at least one criticism of this event. Unfortunately it was so hugely enjoyable and superbly well organised the best I can come up with is that I wish the air-con in the auditorium had been turned up a bit as it was sweltering in there. So with that devastating criticism out of the way I’ll get on with reviewing the Day of the Daleks Special Edition screening hosted by the DWAS at Riverside Studios in London, September 4th 2011.

The first thing I have to commend the organisers on is their choice of venue. Riverside Studios has a long history in film and TV dating back to the early thirties, in fact during the sixties many Hartnell and Troughton episodes of Doctor Who were filmed there, and it continues to be a working site to this day. As a venue it’s also deceptively spacious, allowing attendees to mingle prior to the screening and enjoy the facilities – and by facilities I mean the bar.

The screening began at 1.55pm with a specially filmed prologue linking Day with Destiny of the Daleks, explaining that the Daleks had invaded Earth to plunder it’s resources for their war with the Movellans. My inner fanboy was quite delighted with this clever bit of continuity but before I had the opportunity to discuss it at length with my fellow nerds, inconveniently, the screening of the episodes began.

The first two episodes were followed by a panel with producer Steve Broster and graphic designer Michael Dinsdale chaired by Karen Davies. Steve told us that the idea for a special edition began with the initial desire to replace the original Dalek voices, which many fans consider too robotic. So who better to step up to the plate than Big Finish producer and voice of the new series Daleks, Nicholas Briggs, who as expected does a splendid job here. Broster also explained how he’d wanted the updated special effects to compliment and enhance the existing ones, his aim being to do what he thought the production team in 1971 would have done had they had the time, money and technology. The man responsible for making it happen is Michael Dinsdale to whom this project wasn’t merely a job but a labour of love. Dinsdale admits that after the budget ran out he continued to put in many unpaid hours to ensure he achieved the best possible results – and it shows, as some of his new effects are startlingly good.

Then came the highlight of the day for me as Paul Winter took to the stage to announce the election of Colin Baker as the new Honorary President of the DWAS, at which point Mr Baker made a suprise appearance, joining Paul on stage to accept the honour. Colin could barely contain his delight which was shared by the whole auditorium. Tony Jordan then stepped forward to present Colin with a portrait of himself in costume as The Sixth Doctor bearing the DWAS logo and the words: “Colin Baker, Hon. President, 4th September 2011” saying in due course a new seal of office would be made for him. Following his inauguration Colin spent the next hour in the bar happily meeting the fans, chatting, and signing anything that was put in front of him with his customary charm and good humour.

After lunch we returned to the auditorium where the final two episodes of Day of the Daleks were screened. Jo hitting an Ogron over the head with a wine bottle and her infamous knicker-flashing moment both received a big cheer! Following the episodes came a panel with Katy Manning, Richard Franklin and Scott Fredericks chaired by Antony Wainer. The actors remembered their time working together on the story with great fondness and surprising clarity considering it was forty years ago.

At 6pm the auditorium closed but the event was far from over as we moved down to the bar area where signings and lots of socialising was taking place… at which point your humble reviewer finally clocked off duty and imbibed several small tinctures of the olde Methuselah, purely for medicinal reasons, you understand.

In conclusion I have to say that as someone who has been attending these events on and off since the mid 1980’s I honestly can’t remember enjoying one more. Great venue, great episodes, great panels, great atmosphere – topped off by Colin Baker’s surprise inauguration. Marvellous!

Well done DWAS.

PETER CAPALDI IS THE TWELFTH DOCTOR

[singlepic id=360 w=290 h=209 float=left]

Peter Capaldi has been announced as the Twelfth Doctor during a TV special aired earlier this evening live on BBC One and around the world.

Peter Capaldi, said:

Being asked to play the Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can’t wait to get started.

When asked about the show’s endurance and it’s fans, he said:

Well I think Doctor Who is an extraordinary show, and the thing that strikes me about it is that it’s still here after all this time. And the reason that I think that it is still here is because of the work of the writers and the directors and the producers who’ve worked on the show, the work of all the actors – I don’t just mean the fabulous actors who’ve played the Doctor, but also those actors who sweated inside rubber monster costumes and those who had to wear futuristic lurex catsuits. But the real reason, the big reason that Doctor Who is still with us is because of every single viewer whoever turned on and watch the show at any age at any time in its history and in their history and have took it into their hearts – Doctor Who belongs to all of us, everyone made Doctor Who.

Matt Smith, said:

I just wanted to wish my successor all the best, and just say good luck and good on you for getting it, ‘cos I know he is both a huge fan of the show and a really nice guy. And I think the casting of it made me really excited, genuinely, and as a fan I think it’s a really canny choice. I think he’ll be a hit so … good luck, man, it’s going to be a thrill!

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, said:

It’s an incendiary combination: one of the most talented actors of his generation is about to play the best part on television. Peter Capaldi is in the TARDIS!

Doctor Who companion, Jenna Coleman, said:

I’m so excited Peter Capaldi is the man taking on the challenge of becoming the Twelfth Doctor. With Steven’s writing and his talent I know we’ll be making an amazing show with an incredible incarnation of number 12. I can’t wait to start this new adventure!

Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, said:

Peter Capaldi has all the genius and versatility needed to take on the mantel of the great Time Lord and make the role his own.  He’ll bring his own particular wisdom, charisma and wit to the Twelfth Doctor and take the show into an exciting new era.

Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning, said:

We started thinking Peter Capaldi might be the right person to take on this iconic part a few months ago. But it was only when he did a secret audition at Steven’s house under the cover of darkness that we knew we had our man. He’s an extraordinarily talented actor who can seemingly turn his hand to anything. We can’t wait to premiere his unique take on the Doctor on Christmas Day and we are sure he’s going to become one of the all-time classic Doctors.

BIOGRAPHY

Peter Dougan Capaldi was born in was born in Glasgow on the 4th April 1958. He showed early theatrical flair at primary school where he would stage puppet shows for his classmates and later attended the Glasgow School of Art. He was also the lead singer in a punk rock band called Dreamboys, whose drummer was future comedian Craig Ferguson.

Capaldi has appeared in over forty films and in numerous television series. His film work includes Local Hero, The Lair of the White Worm and Dangerous Liasons. He has also appeared in The Vicar of Dibley, Prime Suspect 3, Psychos, Peep Show, Waking the Dead, Skins, Midsomer Murders and Fallen Angel. He also appeared in Neil Gaiman’s gothic fantasy Neverwhere as The Angel Islington.

In the same year he also wrote Soft Top, Hard Shoulder, which won the Audience Award at the London Film Festival, and wrote and directed Strictly Sinatra.

Capaldi is perhaps best known for his role as spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in the BBC sitcom The Thick of It, a role loosely based on Tony Blair’s spin doctor Alistair Campbell. In 2006 Capaldi was nominated for a BAFTA and RTS Best Comedy Actor Award. He won a BAFTA in 2010 for Male Performance in a Comedy Role. He also won the 2010 British Comedy Award for Best TV Comedy Actor. A film spin-off from The Thick of It, entitled In the Loop, was released in 2009.

In 2008 he appeared in Doctor Who playing Caecilius in The Fires of Pompeii and returned to the franchise in 2009 playing civil servant John Frobisher in Torchwood: Children of Earth.

In 2014 he can also be seen in a new BBC TV adaptation of The Three Musketeers playing Cardinal Richelieu.

Peter Capaldi will make his first appearance as the Twelfth Doctor in the 2013 Doctor Who Christmas Special and his first full series as the Doctor will hit our screens sometime in 2014.

TOUR THE DOCTOR WHO STUDIOS!

logoDoctor Who fans now have a chance to explore the inside of the Doctor’s TARDIS as Cardiff Bay’s Doctor Who Experience has added an exciting new tour of the show’s studios at Roath Lock to their list of attractions.

The focal point of the tour is the TARDIS console room, which was first seen during the 2012 Christmas Special and features in the upcoming 50th anniversary episode airing on November 23rd this year.

TARDIS Console room 2012

The attraction’s events manager Courtney Lewis said:

This is the first time ever we’ve opened the studio and the first time the public have been allowed on the set, which is a really big deal for us.

It will only be open for the summer – so fans need to take up the chance while they can. It really is a unique opportunity for Doctor Who fans The way it will work is people will have the chance to buy a joint ticket for the studio tour and Doctor Who Experience.

On top of that, you can also add the walking tour if you wish. That’s something we’ve launched during the past month and involves visiting 30 filming locations we use for the show around Cardiff Bay

And with it being summer – meaning all the production staff are on holiday – we thought this would be the best time to let people have a look. The tours are done in groups of four or six, so they feel quite exclusive. And people are allowed to take pictures and videos. It’s such an iconic set and it’s great that people are now able to come and see it for themselves.

Tickets for the Doctor Who studio tour are on sale now. The tours will run until Sunday 25th August and begin from the foyer of the Doctor Who Experience.

Prices start from £20.50 for adults and £14.50 for children and tickets also include general admission to the Doctor Who Experience.
