WEB CHAT WITH MICHAEL E. BRIANT

We are delighted to announce that Michael E. Briant will be joining us for a Web Chat on the Planet Mondas Doctor Who Discussion Forum on Monday 26th November 2012.

Michael directed numerous episodes of classic TV series throughout the 1970s such as Blake’s 7, Secret Army, Warship and most famously Doctor Who. Many of his Who stories include The Sea DevilsThe Green Death and The Robots of Death. These are regarded as all-time greats by fans of the series.

Further to those Doctor Who stories directed by Michael, he also worked on The CrusadeThe Power of the Daleks and Fury From The Deep. A total of 46 Doctor Who episodes worked on between 1966-1977.

In his memoir, Michael reminisces about his life and work, from his beginnings as a child actor in the 1950s, followed by a highly successful career working for the BBC and later for Dutch television, right through to his impressive circumnavigation of the world and attack by pirates in the Gulf of Aden. He includes separate chapters on each of his Doctor Who stories and also shares memories of his early years on the programme in the 1960s, while he was working his way up in the TV profession, and William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton were at the TARDIS controls.

Making an episode of a modern-day police, medical or domestic drama was nothing compared to imagining how Colony in Space should look and be made. Twenty parts to be cast, locations to be found for two weeks’ filming in a landscape that looked like a foreign planet, a robot to be created… and, and, and… I confess that sometimes, during the preparation period, I would drive home thinking that if I just crashed the car into a concrete wall and injured myself, then I would not have to direct this show…

As well as being available in printed form in the UK, Michael’s book can also bought in print in the US from CreateSpace and on Kindle.

P.S. SERIES 7 2012

The BBC have released a special scene written by Chris Chibnall that explains what happens to Brian Williams after the conclusion of the story The Power of Three. The scene was never recorded but is presented here in storyboard form, narrated by Arthur Darvill.

Executive Producer Caroline Skinner, said:

We’re delighted we can present this lovely scene written by Chris Chibnall. People took Rory’s dad, Brian, to their hearts very quickly, so it’s fitting we can give the character a degree of closure in this poignant piece.

JANET FIELDING FIGHTS CANCER

Former Doctor Who companion Janet Fielding has cancer, it has been revealed.

Peter Davison, who played the Fifth Doctor opposite Janet as Tegan Jovanka, has organised a fund-raising convention Project Motor Mouth that aims to “not only raise money for a good cause but also keep Janet’s spirits up.”

He, along with Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, and David Tennant, are the first guests announced for the event, which will take place on Saturday 19th January 2013 at the Copthorne Hotel Slough-Windsor. All guests will be appearing subject to work commitments.

About the event:

Janet Fielding has a new fight on her hands not against the Daleks or Cybermen but against cancer. Peter Davison has swung into action and enlisted the help of his fellow Doctors to launch Project Motor Mouth. It will not only raise money for a good cause but also keep Janet’s spirits up.

About Project Motor House:

For more than two years, a group of residents has been working on a plan to save the derelict West Cliff Hall (aka ‘the old motor museum’) and turn it into an exciting mixed use venue where people of all ages can enjoy themselves and where Thanet’s young people can be introduced to a business culture and get the hands-on experience they need to feel confident about starting their own businesses. We intend using low carbon techniques to renovate the building and foster interest in the burgeoning low carbon economy of East Kent.

DOCTOR WHO WINS BEST FAMILY DRAMA AT THE TV CHOICE AWARDS

Doctor Who won the Best Family Drama title last night for the third successive year at the TV Choice Awards.

Series Six beat off competition from Merlin, Glee, and Waterloo Road to win the title, and showrunner Steven Moffat accepted the honour at the ceremony, which was held at The Dorchester in London.

From the TV Choice Awards website:

Yet again, our time-travelling hero triumphs, this time beating Glee, Merlin and Waterloo Road, with the sixth series of the cult drama. While the new seventh run will see the departure of Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill as Amy and Rory, star Matt Smith is signed up to play the Doctor past the 50th anniversary of the show next year and into 2014.

Well done to Steven Moffat and the team!
