DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE #463

DWM463

TEN YEARS AGO, IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT DOCTOR WHO WOULD RETURN TO TELEVISION – BUT THE SERIES WAS NEARLY STOPPED BEFORE IT COULD BEGIN…

In the first part of a look back at how and why Doctor Who was recommissioned back in 2003, DWM talks to the people who ensured its successful comeback, including the then BBC Controller of Drama Commissioning Jane Tranter, BBC Wales’ Head of Drama Julie Gardner, and writer Russell T Davies.

“When Michael Grade arrived back at the BBC as Chairman, Mark Thompson was back as Director General,” Jane tells DWM. “Michael Grade [who had been BBC1 controller in the 1980s, and tried to cancel the show] didn’t like Doctor Who at all. Mark Thompson actually asked me if we could stop. I said, no, we couldn’t!”

MORE OLD ENEMIES RETURN FOR THE 50TH

The BBC have announced that the Doctor’s oldest enemies will be returning to do battle with him for the programme’s 50th anniversary.

Showrunner Steven Moffat, who wrote the anniversary episode said:

The Doctor once said that you can judge a man by the quality of his enemies, so it’s fitting that for this very special episode, he should be facing the greatest enemies of all.

Earlier in the year the BBC announced that another old enemy would be returning for the 50th – the Zygons.[singlepic id=348 w=320 h=240 float=center]Their one and only appearance in Doctor Who was way back in 1975 in the Tom Baker story Terror of the Zygons, but they continue to be one of the programme’s most memorable and popular monsters.

THE GREATEST SHOW IN THE GALAXY AUDIO

The Greatest Show in the Galaxy

STORY

Creepy. That’s what Ace thinks of clowns. But the Doctor insists on entering the talent contest at the Psychic Circus, the self-proclaimed Greatest Show in the Galaxy, on the planet Segonax. What has reduced Segonax to an arid wasteland? Why have the happy-go-lucky circus folk stayed here so long? And why are they no longer happy? Above all, what is the dreadful truth about the ‘talent contests’ run by the sinister Ringmaster and his robot clowns?

The Doctor and Ace need all their death-defying skills in the big top to uncover a brooding, ancient evil that has broken the spirit of the Circus and demanded the sacrifice of so many lives.

Sophie Aldred, who played Ace in Doctor Who, reads Stephen Wyatt’s complete and unabridged novelisation, first published by Target Books in 1989.

CHARACTER ANNOUNCES 12 INCH BRITISH ICON DALEK

Character have announced a special edition 12 inch Dalek to celebrate Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary.

britdalek

For the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, what could be better for collectors than his ultimate foe in truly British styling; Character unveils its Doctor Who 12 inch British Icon Dalek

This ultimate Doctor Who collectable 12 inch Dalek has been produced exclusively in Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary year. Beautifully displayed in the Union Flag, it celebrates the Daleks as a British icon and is ideal gift for all Doctor Who fans. This limited edition free-wheeling Dalek features poseable arm, head and eye while us having the ability to voice 10 Dalek phrases with lights and sound FX.

The Daleks were created by the Kaled scientist, Davros as travel machines. Davros had deduced that the years of radiation and chemical poisoning from an ongoing war would lead his race to mutate into immobile organisms. The Dalek travel machines would house these creatures and allow the Kaleds to survive.

In the course of his experiments however, Davros deliberately removed what he considered to be debilitating emotions from the mutants and a force of evil was spawned!

The Doctor Who 12-inch British Icon Dalek will be available from late August. Suitable for ages 5 years and over it will be a must have for the many generations of fans that the Time Lord has gained in the past 5 decades.

Doctor Who Magazine Special Edition: The Missing Episodes – The Second  Doctor –  Volume 1

The latest special edition of Doctor Who Magazine presents the earliest adventures of the Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton, in pictorial form!

Sadly, 106 Doctor Who episodes from the 1960s aren’t currently held in the BBC’s archives. The original videotapes were erased, and although film recordings for many early episodes were retained, others seem lost forever.

Fortunately for fans, some of these missing episodes survive in telesnap form – these are photographic images that were taken of television screens as the stories were originally broadcast. This 116-page Special from Doctor Who Magazine presents the earliest stories from the Second Doctor’s era in the form of telesnaps, featuring the stories THE POWER OF THE DALEKS, THE HIGHLANDERS, THE UNDERWATER MENACE, THE MOONBASE, THE MACRA TERROR and THE FACELESS ONES .

There’s also a fascinating feature by researcher and author Richard Molesworth, which reveals how some missing episodes of Doctor Who have miraculously been found and returned to the archives over the years.
Fill the gap in your collection, with Doctor Who Magazine: The Missing Episodes – The Second Doctor Volume 1! The magazine is out now, price £5.99.

OFFICIAL 50TH ANNIVERSARY DOCTOR WHO CONVENTION

50thBBC Worldwide have announced that tickets to the official 50th Anniversary convention for Doctor Who will go on sale from 11am on Monday 8 July. As with the Cardiff convention last year, each of the three days over the 22nd, 23rd and 24th November will be a self-contained event running between 9.30am and 6.30pm, comprising panels, associated activities and photo opportunities.

The three main panel sessions each day are:

  • The Eleventh Hour Panel
Ever wanted the inside scoop on the world of Doctor Who? Fancied putting a question to the current Time Lord? Well now’s your chance! The Doctor Who Celebration is hosting ‘The Eleventh Hour’ panels featuring the current cast and crew, including Matt Smith. Take a seat in the theatre and prepare to be entertained…and you might even get to ask your question.
  • The Regenerations Panel
Featuring Tom Baker (Saturday only), Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy. These will be audience Q&A sessions, so get thinking of those questions you’ve always wanted to ask about travelling in the TARDIS, working with K-9 or what Tetrap food is really made of…
  • The Special Effects Show
Leave your Nitro-9 at home – we’ll make your weekend go with a bang big enough to reboot the Pandorica! Everyone attending the Doctor Who Celebration is invited to an exclusive show produced and presented by special effects supervisor Danny Hargreaves. From innocent snow (or perhaps the Great Intelligence’s killer snow) and soothing water (or maybe deadly Mars water) to Cyber bombs and destroyed Daleks – Danny’s worked with them all. With his team from REAL FX, he’ll put on a live show that will let you in on insider secrets, prepare you to tackle the deadliest of enemies and completely blow you away – metaphorically speaking of course! Don’t worry – the universe won’t really be restarted.

As before, there will be two ticket groups – Ice Warriors and Weeping Angels – which will enable access to the panels at different times of the day. A number of other talks and panels will take place throughout the day on two stages, schedules to be announced at a later date.

Other activities taking place include:

  • Walk like a Monster
If you can’t beat them – join them! This is your opportunity to learn just how to make those companions run for their lives – with workshops to teach you how to walk like a monster. This is a chance to learn from an expert – the woman who has the inside scoop on all the monsters, because she teaches them how to scare you into hiding behind the sofa! Ailsa Berk, the Movement Choreographer for Doctor Who, will be welcoming potential monsters of all ages four times daily – there’s no need to book in advance, simply turn up and join in!
  • Stunt School
Ever wondered how the UNIT soldiers roll with the punches? Or how the companions take a tumble? Our highly-skilled team of stunt co-ordinator, Crispin Layfield, and very own Doctor stunt double, Gordon Seed, will be on hand four times a day to put you through your paces and help you learn some easy stunts – no need to book, just turn up when you feel like a piece of the action.
  • Cast Photographs (£20)
Limited opportunities are available throughout the event to have an exclusive photograph taken with Matt Smith. These photographs are taken by our in-house photographer and are printed for you to take home as a souvenir. These photographs are available via pre-booking only and these tickets are expected to sell out fast. Photographs are strictly limited to one per booking, however, group shots are allowed with a maximum of 4 people on one photo.
  • Autographs (£15 each)
You’ve got that very special picture of your favourite Doctor or companion – or maybe the wonderful official celebration souvenir book – there’s nothing that could possibly make it any better, surely? Wrong! The official 50th celebration gives you the chance to get up close and personalised, with autographs from the stars of Doctor Who. Due to the popularity of this event, we need you to pre-book the autographs you’d like to buy when you arrive at the event. Why not start your own 500 Year Diary or Journal of Impossible Things, with a signature from your favourite cast member?
  • Doctor Who Adventures
Doctor Who Adventures has been the ultimate monster magazine for Doctor Who fans since 2006, with fact files, interviews, quizzes, comic strips, free gifts and competitions. This is your chance to design your very own monster with one of the Doctor Who Adventures artists. The Doctor Who Adventures team will be around all weekend, so there’s no need to book to start your own adventure – just turn up on the day.

A series of evening activities are also expected to be arranged.

A variety of merchandise will also be available to purchase, plus a limited edition event t-shirt that can be pre-ordered via the website once booking has opened.

Tickets can be booked via the event website from Monday. Standard tickets are priced at £45 for adults and £20 for kids, while a family ticket (two adults and two children) will cost £104 – booking fee not included.

THE PRINCE OF WALES AND DUCHESS OF CORNWALL CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF DOCTOR WHO

Earlier today Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall visited the Doctor Who studios at Roath Lock in Cardiff, on the third day of their Welsh tour.

Royal Visit Cardiff

The Royal couple arrived at the studios and were greeted by the Time Lord’s oldest enemies, the Daleks, before meeting Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman, and executive producer Steven Moffat.

Matt Smith, said:

The Prince was lovely and a charming bloke. He took quite an interest in the Tardis’s controls and asked a lot of questions about it. He told me and Jenna that he’d been a big fan of the show since he was 15 – which we didn’t know.

royal cyberman

During the tour Charles met actor Nick Briggs, who showed him how to re-create the distinctive Dalek voice using a microphone plugged into a voice modulator, prompting the Prince to utter their famous “exterminate” catchphrase – impressing producer Steven Moffat, who said

I haven’t thought about how I could weave a meeting between the Doctor and the royal family. But Prince Charles’s attempt at being a Dalek was great.”There would be a part in the show for him if he wanted it.

Briggs also gave the Prince’s attempt a glowing review:

The Prince has got a history of performing and has done stuff with The Goon Show previously, so he really stepped up to the plate. Apart from a couple of giggles at the end, he did really good.

Charles and Camilla also met members of the production team from the set and props department, where the Prince was handed a sonic screwdriver by set decorator Adrian Anscombe, who said

He got it to work first time, which doesn’t usually happen.

The Royal couple also enjoyed a guided tour of the TARDIS console room set, Matt Smith inviting the Duchess to throw the main switch to make the prop come to life.

royal tardis

Their Royal Highnesses tour itinerary was as follows:

  • Doctor Who production office, where Their Royal Highnesses will meet the show’s costume designer, storyboard artist, locations manager, graphics artist, set decorator and production designer with displays from each of the skills areas.
  • The TARDIS where Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman and Steven Moffat will show how one of the most famous sets in the world works.
  •  Next is a display of some of the show’s renowned monsters, including Daleks, a Silent, a Weeping Angel, a Cyberman, Strax and an Ood.  Nicholas Briggs, the voice of the Daleks, will demonstrate how to re-create the famous catchphrases.
  • During the final stage of the tour Their Royal Highnesses will be shown a display against a green screen, demonstrated by SFX…
  • Before meeting some Skillset apprentices who are training at Roath Lock in a number of TV functions.

PHILIP HINCHCLIFFE RETURNS TO DOCTOR WHO

Philip HinchcliffeBig Finish are reuniting Tom Baker (The Fourth Doctor) and Louise Jameson (Leela) with former Doctor Who producer Philip Hinchcliffe for two brand new audio adventures.

The Hinchcliffe era is considered by many fans to be one of the most successful and memorable in the show’s fifty year history, watched by huge audiences at the time, and now regularly tops fan polls.

The idea for revisiting the era came after Hinchcliffe visited the Big Finish studios to watch the recording of series three of The Fourth Doctor Adventures. Big Finish Producer David Richardson, said:

I know that Tom Baker and Louise Jameson were thrilled to have him there, and they both enthused to him about what a great time they were having working for Big Finish. After the recording ended, Philip took me and executive producer Nicholas Briggs aside, and pitched the idea of doing a set of stories of the kind he would have hoped to have done, had he stayed on to produce the series for longer. We just said ‘yes’ instantly!

The first story is an epic six-parter set in Victorian London, adapted by Ghost Light writer Marc Platt, and will be paired with a four-parter.

Hinchcliffe has said he wants to create new stories that feel as if they could belong to his second or third season, saying:

They are not designed to follow on from my era, more to re-evoke it for fans who enjoyed the originals: and so the Doctor and Leela in these new stories are the same as they were then, in the glorious seventies! That’s the beauty of radio – they look and sound the same

Doctor Who: Philip Hinchcliffe Presents will be released in August 2014, and is available for pre-order.
