DOCTOR WHO PROM ON MONDAY AT 4PM

Don’t forget there’s a treat for Doctor Who fans this bank holiday Monday with this year’s Doctor Who Prom being shown at 4pm on BBC One and BBC One HD.

The official BBC Doctor Who website, says:

If you weren’t at the Royal Albert Hall for the Doctor Who Proms back in July, make a note in your diary… You can enjoy highlights of the concert’s visual splendour as well as the magical music when Doctor Who at the Proms premieres on BBC One this Monday at 4pm.

The concert features the very best of Murray Gold’s scores for recent adventures as well as music from the eras of the early Doctors. Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman make special appearances and it’s great to see Madam Vastra and Strax back, hosting the Prom… In fact, any concert without a Sontaran and a Silurian will now seem relatively pedestrian!

And watch out for some very special surprise guests who help make this an unforgettable celebration of the music of Doctor Who.

A POLICE BOX TO MATERIALISE IN BOSCOMBE!

Police BoxThe Twelfth Doctor, actor Peter Capaldi, has been invited to Boscombe near Bournemouth to unveil the town’s latest weapon in it’s fight against crime – a police box.

The 1960’s-style police box has been granted planning permission and organisers hope it will become a tourist attraction, as well as deterring crime in the area.

Local councillor and former mayor, Phil Stanley-Watts, first suggested the idea for the police box five years ago, and has told the Bournemouth Echo he intends to invite the new Doctor to the launch in November:

I’m trying to get Peter Capaldi to open it. I bumped into him when I was working as an extra on a play. I will contact the BBC so it will depend on what they say. This will put Boscombe on the map in a positive way. There used to be a lot of police boxes about. There’s going to be a police presence there. I think it does a number of things and it’s an attraction in itself.

The BBC has yet to respond to the invitation but we’ll keep you posted.

RARE WILLIAM HARTNELL TV INTERVIEW DISCOVERED

William HartnellA rare television interview with William Hartnell from 1967 has been discovered and will be included as an extra on the upcoming DVD release of Hartnell’s final story, The Tenth Planet.

This came to light yesterday following the BBFC’s classification of extras which included the Hartnell interview.

Restoration team member Steve Roberts confirmed that the interview was in-vision, meaning it was on screen as opposed to being audio only, and revealed the interview had been discovered by his fellow team member Richard Bignell.

The interview was conducted by Roger Mills for Points West, the BBC’s regional news programme, and was recorded in Hartnell’s dressing room in the Gaumont Theatre in Taunton, where he was appearing in the pantomine Puss in Boots. The interview aired on Tuesday 17th January 1967.

The extra is 3 minutes 16 seconds long, and Bignell detailed the discovery of what is now the only known on-screen interview with Hartnell known to exist:

A few years ago, I was doing research into the article I was preparing for Issue 3 of Nothing at the End of the Lane on Hartnell’s rather disastrous performance as Buskin the Fairy Cobbler in the pantomime Puss In Boots, which toured around four different venues in December 1966 and January 1967, just three months after he had completed work on The Tenth Planet.

Whilst doing some work at the BBC Written Archive Centre, I checked the respective Programme-as-Broadcast sheets for the period, looking specifically at the local BBC news programmes to see if Hartnell’s appearance in panto was deemed worthy of a television report.

He was in fact interviewed twice. Once in the first week of the tour in Ipswich (shown on Look East on 27th December 1966) and again during the final week in Taunton for Points West, shown on 17th January 1967. As I’d built up some contacts in the BBC’s regional news libraries working on the DVDs, I dropped the respective archives a line to see if there was any chance the two interviews survived.

The first interview for Look East had long gone, but the ladies in the Bristol News Library very quickly got back to me to say that the interview done in Taunton still survived. We arranged for the footage to be sent over to London, where it was duly transferred. It shows Hartnell in his dressing room doing his make-up for one of his performances, with his “Doctor’s ring” on the table and a Berwick Dalek playsuit stuffed in the corner. Hartnell speaks about his problems acting against the Daleks and how pantomime isn’t “legitimate” theatre! Enjoy!!

The Tenth Planet DVD will be released on Monday 18th November and is available to pre-order

SALES OF DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE SOAR!

Sales of Doctor Who Magazine have soared in recent months according to figures released yesterday by the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

DWM had a total average net circulation of 31,692 per issue between January and June 2013 – a rise of 10.3% on the previous six months and 17% year-on-year increase.

Tom Spilsbury, editor of Doctor Who Magazine, said:

I’m absolutely delighted – and a little bit stunned – to see Doctor Who Magazine’s ABC figure increase by so much for the first part of 2013. Whenever these figures are published, we always brace ourselves – sometimes we might have gone up a bit, sometimes we might have gone down a bit. In fact, even holding steady is always a major achievement in the current magazine climate. For us to have increased by more than 10 per cent since the last report is staggering, and also highlights our strong sales in North America, due to the increasing popularity of Doctor Who there.

Of course, the second half of 2013 will see the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who itself, so here at Panini we’re very hopeful that we can keep these strong sales – and improve on them – in time for the next ABC report in six months’ time. We’ve got some great plans for the 50th anniversary, which will include strong coverage of the forthcoming Anniversary and Christmas Specials, as well as the Adventure in Space and Time drama for BBC Two. We’re also planning further ahead, as we look forward into next year and the arrival of the Twelfth Doctor.

I’d like to thank all of DWM’s readers for staying with us over the years, and to give a huge welcome to anyone who’s picked up the magazine for the first time recently. Doctor Who Magazine has been around for almost 34 years now, and we’re going to be here for a long time yet. For DWM, the best is definitely still to come!

Doctor Who Adventures, which last time reported a slight rise, had a total average net circulation of 24,497 – a drop of 23.3% on the July – December 2012 period and a 23.2% fall year-on-year.

Jaynie Bye, of Immediate Media Co, which publishes DWA, said:

After changing frequency, Doctor Who Adventures magazine is now the top-selling boys’ fortnightly title in a tough and challenging market. With a new Doctor just announced, the 50th anniversary of the programme, and renewed interest in the Time Lord, we are very optimistic about the future of this well-established magazine.

THE LIFE & SCANDALOUS TIMES OF JOHN NATHAN-TURNER

John Nathan-TurnerThe first thing I have to say about Richard Marson’s book, The Life and Scandalous Times of John Nathan-Turner, is just how much I detest the title. I know authors and publishers are in the business of selling books, but for me, choosing this title amounts to little more than a cynical marketing ploy to generate wider interest in a book that has little appeal outside of the anorak-wearing Doctor Who community.

The opening few chapters of the book look at John’s early life and make for fairly interesting, if unremarkable, reading. We learn something of his family life, time at school, friendships, and enthusiasm for all things theatrical. We learn that as a child he was a bit of a show-off sometimes and liked nothing more than being the centre of attention. As a teen he liked music, being particularly fond of Dusty Springfield, and that he once purchased a pac-a-mac at the seaside because it was raining. Hold the presses stuff, to be sure.

Tom Baker TitlesFrom there the book progresses on to John’s short-lived career as an actor before he joined the BBC. Friends and colleagues remember this as a happy time for him; he was considered  extremely competent, hard-working and was well-liked by everyone for his sense of humour and warm personality. In fairness to Marson he covers John’s earlier years at the BBC quite even-handedly, although there is always a gossipy over-the-garden-wall quality to much of what he writes, interspersed with quotes from friends and colleagues, an approach that I feel is over-used and doesn’t quite work for me.

Peter Davison TitlesOne of the reasons it doesn’t work is that the battle lines are clearly drawn early on, with one group pro John and the other still very much against. In fact at certain points in the book, especially when there is conflict, it starts to feel more like a list of quotes rather than the story of someone’s life. One person makes a claim, another refutes it, and makes a counter-claim. Someone is accused of having said or done something and denies it, then is accused of being a liar or having a particular axe to grind, and so it goes on. At a guess I’d say that if all the quotes were removed from this book it would be a slender volume indeed.

The  biggest failure of this book is that no-one who reads it is likely to change their mind very much about John Nathan-Turner, one way or the other. What readers may change their minds about are some of the people who chose to contribute to it.

Gary  Downie aside, the people who come off worst from this book are the Doctor Who fans themselves – especially some of the so-called ‘superfans’ of the day.

Colin Baker titlesOne thing is clear from the book, while John was often a willing participant, Gary was the one who actively sought out men for their sexual gratification, trawling Doctor Who conventions for what the two of them described as “doable barkers”. Although no-one has ever come forward to allege any improper behaviour by the pair, Sophie Aldred who played Ace in the series, does say in the book: “There was quite a lot of stuff that I wouldn’t have been comfortable with and I believe some of the fans may have suffered… young men”. However Aldred offers no evidence to indicate that any sexual liaisons John and Gary had with fans of the show were anything other than consensual.

Sylvester McCoy titlesThis is not the only example of material being included in the book which isn’t substantiated. Time and again in this book we are presented with someone’s version of events remembered in a way that tends to present them in a particular light, with blame for whatever went wrong mostly shunted off onto somebody else. This is one theme of the book which becomes tiresome very quickly, as does the gossipy bitchy tone of some of the interviewees, some of whom I had never heard of before, and if this is anything to go by hope never to hear of again.

For me one of the few sections of the book deserving some praise are the final chapters. These deal with John’s faltering career, failing health and eventual death. They are written with a small degree of sensitivity, absent from most of the book – an absence which may prompt some cynical readers to question it’s authenticity at this late stage.

JNTWould I recommend this book to another Doctor Who fan? Reluctantly, yes I would. If you can endure reading about the exploits of some of the dreadful people mentioned in it – occasionally including John himself, who certainly had his moments – the book is an interesting document about how television used to be made at the BBC, in particular Doctor Who, during the era of producer John Nathan-Turner.

THE NEW DOCTOR TAKES OVER TWITTER

The BBC have announced that during the build up to the big reveal on Sunday evening and during the annoucement itself Doctor Who dominated the twittersphere.

The live announcement of Peter Capaldi’s casting triggered a response of 542,000 tweets from fans – at one point reaching 22,081 tweets a minute – making it the highest TV tweet minute peak recorded so far this year.

Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor averaged over 9000 tweets per minute and one tweet alone from the official twitter account – @bbcdoctorwho – tweeting the first official photograph of the new Doctor was promptly re-tweeted 25,000 times.

SPEARHEAD FROM SPACE BLU-RAY REVIEW

Spearhead From SpaceSpearhead From Space is a very special story indeed. Not only does it introduce Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor, it also introduces the idea that the Doctor has two hearts,  the classic monsters the Autons, and is the first ever Doctor Who story to be made in colour. Another interesting, but very important fact, is that the adventure is the only classic series story to be recorded entirely on 16mm film – for reasons that are too complex and long to go into here. It is for this reason that the people behind the DVD range have been able to release the story on Blu-ray in true HD quality.

The picture quality on this blu-ray story is quite simply astounding. I have seen Spearhead From Space many times over the years, on video and DVD, and it has never looked this good. The colours are bright and vibrant, the picture quality is sharp, and I really did notice more detail than ever before. The film has been graded to give it a slightly more cinematic look and it really works, while the soundtrack has also been cleaned up to match.

jon pertwee caroline johnThe extra features on this release consist of four items. There are two documentaries covering the lives and careers of both Jon Pertwee and Caroline John, including interesting and heart-warming tributes to the sadly missed stars. They both feature interviews with family and friends discussing their lives, and rare videos and photos. Also included is a 22 minute mute black and white film, also in HD, of the different elements filmed to make up the iconic Pertwee title sequence, this is followed by a short three minute featurette on the restoration of the story for release on blu-ray and comparisons between the DVD and blu-ray versions.

To sum up, I would recommend this release to any die-hard or new to the classic series fan. The story itself is fun and different to anything that had gone before and is a welcome addition to any fans Doctor Who Collection.

We really cannot recommend their events enough – they’re terrific value for money, well organised and have a very friendly relaxed atmosphere.

We’ll keep you updated on further guests as they are announced.
